Career Coach

Community Strengthening Services  

 Full Time Position (40 hrs/week until June 30, 2019, then 32hrs/week starting July 1st ) Non-exempt

Reports to: Employment and Economic Opportunity Programs Manager

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Career Coach is responsible for providing job-seekers with on-ramps to employment pathways through training and occupational coaching in targeted industries with the goal of securing career track employment and measurable skills gained.  The Career Coach will provide coaching to access resources and maintain benefits as needed throughout the program, enhanced individualized, long-term guidance and coaching for participants as they work through a career plan including progression through training and into employment as well as employment retention support. The Career Coach position is part of the Community Economic Opportunity (CEO) Project collaborative managed by the Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization, an A Home For Everyone (AHFE) joint office initiative and is funded by Worksystems, Inc. The Career Coach position has the potential to transition to a SNAP only specific funded program in which participants must receive and maintain SNAP benefits while enrolled in program.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide ongoing outreach and recruitment of low-income, at risk and/or homeless, culturally and geographically diverse populations facing barriers to employment who reside throughout Multnomah County. This may involve planning and implementing new recruitment strategies and techniques.
  • Engage participants in Career Mapping to identify strengths, gifts and capacities, develop goals and concrete strategies for addressing barriers to employment.  Develop these strategies into a career plan that incorporates WorkSource Portland Metro Center services and other community resources to address barriers.
  • Adhere to the Worksystems' program standards and Economic Opportunity Program (EOP) model of career coaching.
  • Learn about services available to SNAP & ABAWD recipients and apply them to participants as necessary
  • Learn about and provide access to resources to ensure that program participants are receiving all benefits that they may be eligible for.
  • Develop a system to plan, monitor and document activities, especially during active program engagement in training and job search. Maintain detailed case notes and follow up activities.
  • Participate in IRCO's CEO Project Collaborative for monthly team meetings and attend all AHFE and EOP Worksystems coaching meetings as necessary.
  • Report progress to IRCO's CEO Project Manager each quarter through report format as provided and attends regular career coach meetings as scheduled.
  • Provide continuous and enhanced life skills, soft skill development and career coaching to help participants build employability and life skills.
  • Engage participants in job readiness activities that will address cultural and linguistic barriers to employment.
  • Link eligible and ready clients to other IRCO resources and partner resources. 
  • Provide enhanced and ongoing job search and placement support to participants
  • Provide retention and advancement support once participant has entered employment.
  • Provide resource information for tutoring during occupational training or volunteer management as necessary.
  • Open communication with key partners and employers on participant's activities, progress and challenges through established systems, phone calls, emails and regular meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics to reflect project activities.
  • Enter data into I-Trac and ETO.
  • Participate in meetings and trainings as requested by supervisor.  
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be bilingual (Spanish/English) and bi-culturally competent.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing in Spanish and English.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Experience providing case management, information and referrals, career coaching and advocacy.
  • Advanced knowledge and/or experience in the healthcare vocational trainings, especially in the care-giving and/or nursing assistant field) and nursing assistant licensing processes, job development and job placement activities.
  • Experience with community networking and organizing.
  • Intermediate proficiency in all programs of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner.  High attention to detail required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical and strategic problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in team setting, as well as independently; be flexible and adapt well to different dynamics in a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to support organizational and program specific mission and goals.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Must have driver's license, access to vehicle and ability to obtain automobile insurance at levels required by agency (100/300/100).
  • Satisfactory results from civil, criminal and motor vehicle background check required.

 

COMPENSATION:    Starting pay rate is $16.50-$17.00.  Competitive benefits package, including: 100% employer paid health insurance (employee portion), disability, life insurance, paid time off, 12 paid holidays, retirement plan, free parking and more.
